Herrin of Nicholas county, Ky. - Cheryl Rawlings - Nov 6, 2009[Print]
I have worked on my dad's family tree off and on . Now that I have retired maybe I can get more of it done. I know that my dad belonged in the Thomas Herrin and Sarah Douglas line. Thomas was born in 1793-1853 and Sarah 1795-1865. My dad's faher was Henry Clay Herrin 1876-1970. Henry Clay's father was John Bright Herrin-1849 amd Mary Jewell 1853. John's father was James Herrin 1820 and Nelly Herrin  1822. I have noticed that Nelly is sometimes called Ester or Hester. I don't know why.James's father was Thomas and Sarah.
I hope this makes sense. If anyone is related to this branch of the family. I would love to hear from you.

James L wife was named Esther.

My census analysisn would indicate that James Herrin (b. abt 1820) and married Hester Stoops, was the son of Thomas and Sally Douglas Herrin. She was the daughter of William Stoops and Sarah Warren. This family was from Hunterdon Co., PA.
By coincidence Thomas' brother John Herrin married Hannah Ann Byers, widow of Jonathan Stoops. The marriage occurred in 1851 Marion Co., Indiana. Ann was from Westmoreland Co., PA. Ernie Stoops (a family member) tells me that these two Stoops families have not been identified as relatives.
It remains then, who is the family of James L. Herrin whose wife was Hester Herrin. Stan and I differ. He could be the son of either Shadrack or his brother, William, according to unindentified males in both families. The son Jesse, may palce him as William's son, based on naming conventions.

James and Hester Herrin had a son born in 1849.His name was John Bright Herrin. He married Mary Jewell . I can't find anything in the courthouse that shows the marriage record.

If you look t the 1850 Nicholas Co., KY Census for James Herrin (1820) his wife's name is simply "Hetty" with the t's falied to be crossed. Likewise, if you look at Thomas, his wife's name was messed up. Clearly it can be seen as Sally or Polly because of the incomplete erasure. Hetty is  the nickname for Hester. Another problem solved!

I found it now: John Herrin, brother to Thomas, married Mary Ann Stoops 14 Feb 1851 in Hamilton Co., Indiana after his first wife, Sarah _____, died. They had one son, Robert John Herrin, b. 2 Feb 1852 in Hamilton Co., Indiana. I don't know if Mary Ann was a widow or not, but I suspect  that she was and her husband had been John Stoops who died in 1840 Hamilton Co. Indiana. These Stoops were from Pennsylvania, but lived in Nicholas Co., KY before Indiana. Hence, we see here a connection between James Herrin (wife Hester Stoops) and John Herrin (wife Mary Ann Stoops), all who had been in Nicholas Co., Indiana. Census records and ages does show that either Nelly and Hester were the same age or the same person. We still don't know who James' father is, noting that James L. Herrin (wife Hester Herrin) were in Missouri, and that Thomas signed the bond for him.

Gettin' old. 1851... not 1855.

Oops!. The John Herrin who married Ann Stoops was likely the BROTHER of Thomas Herrin. I have to look further. I say that because John's first wife was Sarah ____. She was dead by the 1850 census, and the John who married Ann Stoops did so in 1855.

Some more (A Post from Herren Archives): Did Jesse Herrin, who went to Shelby Co, IN and on to Marion Co, IN have a son named John Herrin? If so, did this John Herrin marry the Widow, Ann Stoops in 1851? A John Herrin and Mary Stoops Herrin had a son Robert John Herrin on 02-02-1852. By 1860, the father, John was gone and Ann and little John were in Hamilton Co, IN. Does this match anything?

I found some good stuff! See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=fittingsbf3a&id=I327 for the Hester (Nellie) Stoops and James Herrin information. She had a brother, John Stoops, who went to Marion Co., Indiana.  John Herrin of Marion Co., Indiana married the widow, Ann Stoops, and lived in Hamilton Co., Indiana. John was the son of Jesse H. Herrin and Celia Swinney formerly of Pulaski Co., KY. Jesse was a brother to Thomas Herrin of Nicholas/Bourbon Co., KY. I believe that Ann was the widow of John Stoops, but this posting does not show that. Many Herrins are buried in the "Stoops" Cemtery at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence Marion Co., Indiana.

Sorry, I hit the maxium characters.
James S and James L live in the same township in Macon Co., have several pices of land adjacent to each other, and often go to the county seat together.
James S has 11 children.  Many remained in Macon Co and their descendents are still there.
I do no know where James L and Esther died.  Their son, born in Ohio, is found in Vernon Co., MO is 1880.  His children scatter to Kansas and Indiana.
I do not have any information on James and Nelly.
